We were not ready for the spirit that overwhelmed us as we approached the Kirtland Temple for the first time. The colors were turning along the highway and we'd just eaten lunch at a park like roadside rest area. We prayed that we could feel the spirit of the Temple when we got there. However, we weren't prepared for how we felt. It wasn't the beauty (though it was so pretty) it was "feeling" the sacrifice of so many who came to build it. On our tour we learned that many gave ALL their belongings and lived in the foyer of the temple huddled together to get it build so they "could make their covenants with the Lord". They built it by trial and error and some of their "engineering" should have never withstood the elements and pressure of wear-and-tear of people and nature. While there you could "hear" the children's voices playing on the grass as the parents worked on eternity. During the tour the guides told of the miracles that happened within the temple and on "dedication day"where over 3,000 huddled together in the "schooling" rooms so they could hear the words of the prophet. We actually stood in Joseph's office upstairs.....that was so humbling! I couldn't believe we were so blessed for the opportunities to see places like this. It truly did us more good than any beaches on Hawaii!
